Brahms began learning piano at seven and played in taverns by fifteen to support his family. At seventeen, he toured with violinist Reményi, where he was introduced to Hungarian music and met violinist Joachim.

At twenty, Brahms met the Schumanns, who greatly influenced his career. After Beethoven, the music world split into two main styles: Wagner and Liszt's programmatic Romanticism and Brahms's new Classical style, which opposed exaggerated emotional expression and favored a more restrained and profound approach.
