Saint-Saëns, born into poverty and orphaned early, began learning piano at two and a half. By ten, he was performing publicly, and at twelve, he entered the Paris Conservatory to study organ and composition. After graduation, he worked as an organist in a church.
Saint-Saëns was a close friend of Liszt, and his works were deeply influenced by him. His C Minor Piano Concerto No. 3 was dedicated to Liszt. A polymath, Saint-Saëns explored literature, philosophy, languages, astronomy, and physics. In 1871, he co-founded the National Music Society to promote French music.
