Sibelius was born into a family of doctors and started learning the piano at nine and the violin at fifteen. He initially studied law at Helsinki University but later devoted himself to music, earning a scholarship to study in Berlin and Vienna.

Upon returning to Finland, he began composing using Finnish cultural music elements. His 1899 symphonic poem "Finlandia" is a stirring work that drew global attention to the Finnish struggle for independence and has historical significance. Sibelius's music is grand and majestic, distinct from the more delicate style of fellow Nordic composer Grieg.
