On Christmas Eve, the four March sisters are at home keeping warm. Jo, clever and outspoken, is upset because she doesn't have a Christmas gift. The oldest sister, Meg, also feels sad, saying that poverty is hard. The youngest, Amy, complains. Only Beth, the third sister, continues cleaning and reminds everyone that at least their parents and each other are safe during the war. The snow outside keeps falling, and the weather grows colder. Their mother comes back, telling them that a neighbor's family is starving and cold. What should the March family do, with little of their own to spare?
